Housing Reality Check

Home sellers are pulling properties off the market at the fastest pace since 2020, with delistings reaching 5.8% nationwide in April as higher mortgage rates and weaker buyer demand erode pricing power. Elevated borrowing costs, rising fuel prices, and cautious consumers are extending listing times, prompting sellers to withdraw rather than accept lower offers. While inventory is building and pending sales ticked up modestly, the shift underscores a market recalibrating toward balance after years of seller dominance.1

HR Reset Underway

Uber is cutting 23% of its people division, targeting HR and recruiting roles as part of a broader push to streamline operations under new leadership. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed the move as necessary to reduce complexity and improve organizational efficiency, highlighting overlapping responsibilities and fragmented teams. While not explicitly tied to AI, the cuts come alongside growing investment in agentic tools, signaling a longer-term shift toward automation-driven productivity.2

Benefits Cliff Risk

Social Security’s retirement trust fund is projected to run dry by 2032, triggering an automatic 24% cut that would reduce average monthly benefits by roughly $500 for retirees. The impact would be widespread—affecting 63 million Americans—with some states facing even steeper reductions as aging populations amplify the strain. While the cuts are not inevitable, the timeline is tightening, increasing pressure on policymakers to enact reforms before insolvency forces across-the-board reductions.3

Supply Squeeze Looms

Global oil inventories are rapidly declining, falling by more than 250 million barrels since March and putting stockpiles on track for critical lows ahead of peak summer demand. Ongoing supply disruptions, including losses tied to Middle East tensions, are tightening the market even as softer economic conditions begin to weigh on fuel demand. With prices rising and the risk of rationing emerging, the balance between constrained supply and weakening demand is becoming a central pressure point for global energy markets.4

Disrupted to Dust

The rise of generative AI has triggered a sharp reset across the startup ecosystem, leaving hundreds of pre-ChatGPT unicorns struggling with outdated models, bloated cost structures, and collapsing valuations. Nearly half of U.S. billion-dollar startups haven’t raised funding in three years, while those that did during the 2021–2022 boom have seen valuations fall sharply, with 2021 startups down about 68% on average. As capital floods into AI-native firms, legacy startups face dwindling funding options, forcing many toward discounted exits or existential pivots in an increasingly AI-driven market landscape.5

Energy Costs, Retail Gains

Costco’s gas stations are emerging as a powerful traffic driver, with the retailer reporting record-breaking fuel volumes as rising prices push consumers toward lower-cost options. The surge is not only boosting near-term sales—helping the company top revenue expectations—but also attracting first-time members who are likely to spend more across its broader retail ecosystem. As macro pressures persist, Costco’s value proposition is reinforcing customer loyalty while positioning fuel as a strategic gateway to higher-margin in-store and digital growth.6
