Crisis Looming

Reported this week, recession fears are rising on Wall Street as economists warn that war‑driven oil shocks, weakening consumer spending, and a cooling labor market are raising the odds of a downturn. Major forecasters now see recession risks well above normal levels, citing persistent geopolitical conflict and uneven hiring as growing threats to the soft‑landing outlook. While policymakers push back on stagflation concerns, analysts say the window to avoid a contraction is narrowing.1

Mortgage Meltdown

Last week, mortgage demand plunged as rates surged to their highest level since October, sending both refinance and purchase applications sharply lower. Higher-for-longer energy-driven yields pushed the 30‑year fixed rate to 6.43%, intensifying affordability pressures and sidelining would‑be buyers. Even with rate volatility tied to shifting war negotiations, economists warn that inflation‑driven “second‑round effects” could keep borrowing costs elevated.2

Pain at the Pump

Americans are being forced to make painful trade‑offs as surging gas prices strain household budgets. From skipping meals and cutting back on groceries to canceling kids’ activities and rethinking work, families across income levels are feeling the squeeze as fuel costs jump more than 30% in a month. Even if geopolitical tensions ease, professionals warn that elevated gas prices and their ripple effects on food and transportation costs won’t disappear overnight.3

Race to Doorstep

Earlier this week, FedEx launched its new SameDay Local service, partnering with OneRail to offer two‑hour and end‑of‑day delivery windows as competition in last‑mile logistics intensifies. The rollout connects customers to a nationwide network of more than 1,000 delivery providers, aiming to match Amazon, Walmart, and Target as they rapidly expand ultra‑fast fulfillment options. With retailers racing to shrink delivery times, the battle for speed is reshaping the future of e‑commerce.4

AI Checkout Revolution

As of this week, Gap has become the first major fashion retailer to launch instant checkout directly within Google’s Gemini, signaling a bold leap into agentic AI‑powered shopping. By integrating its product data and leveraging Gemini’s conversational search, Gap aims to capture customers where discovery is increasingly happening — inside AI platforms. With new tools like AI‑driven sizing on the way, the retailer is positioning itself at the forefront of a fast‑evolving digital commerce landscape.5

Housing Whiplash

Last week, the spring housing market opened on shaky ground as mortgage rates jumped to 6.53%, their highest level since late 2025. Rising oil prices tied to the Iran war pushed yields higher, undermining earlier expectations for rate relief just as buyers finally gained leverage from growing inventory and longer days on market. With uncertainty clouding both affordability and demand, economists warn this spring season may bring more volatility than momentum.6
