Meme Surge Ignites Wendy’s
Shares of Wendy’s jumped roughly 30% in the latest session as a viral Reddit post sparked retail investor enthusiasm around the company’s turnaround prospects. The rally coincided with fresh leadership hires and growing speculation of a potential buyout by activist investor Nelson Peltz, amplifying bullish momentum despite recent sales declines. The surge highlights the continued influence of meme-driven trading, where sentiment and narrative can quickly reshape market valuations.1
Oil Plunges Below War Line
Reported Wednesday, oil prices fell below $75 per barrel for the first time since the Iran conflict began, as easing tensions and a U.S.–Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz reduced supply risks. The move caps a steep monthly decline and reflects shifting expectations toward potential oversupply amid softer demand. Still, depleted global inventories and fragile geopolitical conditions leave the market exposed to further volatility.2
Hybrid Edge Builds
On Wednesday, a new forecast signaled Toyota is closing in on General Motors in U.S. auto sales, with modest growth driven by surging hybrid demand while GM faces a notable decline. The gap is narrowing as consumers favor hybrids over slower-than-expected EV adoption, reinforcing Toyota’s long-standing strategy. If the trajectory holds, GM’s decades-long sales leadership could face a credible challenge by year-end.3
Buyers Hit Brake
Fresh data showed U.S. new single-family home sales fell for a second straight month in May, signaling a worsening standoff between buyers and builders as high mortgage rates and elevated prices erode affordability. The pullback, which pushed sales to a seven-month low in the West, underscores how borrowing costs tied to broader geopolitical pressures are delaying demand. With inventories rising and buyers waiting for rate relief, a meaningful housing recovery may be pushed further into the future.4
Logistics Goes Cold
Announced this week, UPS is investing $48 million to upgrade 27 temperature-controlled facilities, expanding its capacity to handle sensitive healthcare shipments such as biologics and GLP-1 drugs. The move highlights the rapid growth of cold-chain logistics, as more advanced therapies require tightly managed transport conditions. By scaling this infrastructure globally, UPS is positioning healthcare as a central pillar of its long-term growth strategy and competitive edge in supply chain services.5
SNAP Reset Reshapes Demand
Approved in recent weeks, expanding SNAP purchase restrictions across 23 states are beginning to reshape grocery demand, with potential to reduce food and beverage sales by up to $830 million this year. The targeted limits on sugary drinks and snacks are pushing major brands to reassess product portfolios and accelerate reformulations as health-focused policies gain traction. As consumer budgets tighten and regulations evolve, food companies face a structural shift in demand that could redefine category growths.6
